There are many skilled trades in the work field. Most require licenses to work in the field. This license alone will allow for an industry standard. In our industry, anyone can go to school and get a job as a mechanic. This is not safe, there needs to be a certain amount of years of experience obtained to work in the field. There is a huge liability when working on one's vehicle/ truck. If a mechanic is poorly trained or has less experience , it can lead to a fatal accident or injuries to anyone else sharing the road with that individual. This is why there is no respect for mechanics, there is no standard in place. A Technician is an electrician, hybrid specialist, heavy equipment maintainer, hydraulic maintainer, mechanical engineer, safety inspector, and many more titles. There are some cases where technicians will find serious safety concerns on vehicles before manufacturer's will. 

If we are a licensed trade, technicians will make more money, have a better reputation, and set an industry standard. It's time for change. We cannot continue to be over worked and under paid. Mechanics keep the economy moving.
