Each year 3 billion disposable nappies are disposed of in the U.K, accounting for 2 to 3 percent of all household waste [1].

90% of these nappies go straight to landfill, which in turn take hundreds of years to degrade [2]. This would mean if William Shakespeare had used disposable nappies, they would still be decomposing today. We need to stop them from having a long term and harmful impact on this planet.

Parents will always need access to nappies and with each infant using on average 4-6,000 disposable nappies before being potty trained [1], why can’t they be convenient, reliable and Eco-friendly? There are already companies out there making nappies that are better for the environment such as Beaming Baby which are over 77% biodegradable and Mum and You who produce nappies which are 100% biodegradable (apart from tabs) compared to standard nappies at around 25% [3] [4].

That’s why I’m calling on the companies that make Pampers, Huggies and supermarkets to make their nappies and packaging environmentally friendly!

Whilst the most Eco-friendly option is a reusable nappy, these are not always convenient or available for parents.

These products do not need to be on this planet for over four times our estimated life time, which is why I am petitioning to put a stop to this.
