Stephen B started this petition to Mike Greene (Cabinet Member for Sustainability and Transport, BCP Council)

In recent years there have been several high speed accidents along Queens Park Avenue requiring the road to be closed off whilst the Police and Ambulance Service attend (as seen in the petition image*). There have also been a number of recent incidents where a crossing lamp has been destroyed due to reckless/dangerous driving at high speeds.

Thankfully, nobody has been seriously injured yet. However, despite this being a problem area for speeding and regardless of the evidence provided to support changes to the speed limit or introduction of calming measures, BCP Council do not see speeding as a priority unless there are deaths associated with accidents.

BCP Council are also reluctant to make the necessary changes to the speed limit for fear of upsetting the police. However, Local Highways Authorities, when setting speed limits, must take into account needs of vulnerable road users first and foremost, and do not need to take into account any operational decisions of the police on the level of enforcement.

This area is used by many children on their journey to and from school (Bishop of Winchester Academy, Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School for Girls), and other pedestrians who use the various green spaces at Strouden Park and Queens Park.

BCP Council Officers are responsible for providing technical input to any changes, but they go to great lengths to explain how resources are stretched and look for excuses not to take action. Ultimately, it is Councillor Mike Greene, the elected Cabinet Member for Transport who has the power to make the changes.

Cllr Greene has been provided with all the information necessary to support the urgently required changes in Queens Park and in failing to take the appropriate action he is now wilfully allowing speeding in excess of 50mph and 60mph in the area. This is in spite of the fact that the exact same justification was used when he approved changes to speed limits and engineering work within his own Ward (Bournemouth Central), when there were no deaths or serious accidents involved in the decision-making.

As our elected representative we, the residents, petition Cllr Mike Greene to implement a default 20mph speed limit across the Queens Park Ward.
