JohnK Wright,V started this petition to Major League Baseball and

Rangers Outfielder Willie Calhoun was hit by a pitch to his face in yesterday's ballgame (March 8, 2020).  He suffered a fractured jaw and will be out for probably several months for his face, jaw and teeth to heal.

I believe that this might have been prevented if Major League Baseball implemented a new rule, (Let's Call this Willie's Rule or the Calhoun Rule) that will require ALL Major League Players to wear protective covering in their batting helmets to cover this jawbone area.  Some players have this but it is just voluntary.

I propose that MLB require all players to have this protective piece on their helmets by a to be determined (tbd) date either this year or the start of the next season.

This is in the interest of player safety.   The NFL made changes to helmets and NHL has also implemented rules for their helmets.

I believe it is time for MLB to do the same to prevent other injuries to other players.

This is so very sad for Willie. Once he heals physically and mentally, I wonder if he will ever be the same in the batter's box. It reminds me of an another player in the 60's, Tony Conigliaro who was hit in the face.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Conigliaro), He was never the same player I heard on the radio today that there is an attachment that some Major Leaguers use that protects the chin area on their helmets. In light of this tragedy,

I hope the Rangers and the rest of MLB adopt a rule (call it "Willie's Rule" or the "Calhoun Rule") to mandatory require hitters to wear this protective device to protect future injuries to make the game a little bit safer.
