Kevin Mooneyhan started this petition to Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred

Commissioner Manfred,

We, the undersigned, submit this letter for your consideration, not as Republicans or Democrats, not as independents, libertarians, or any other political faction, but simply as baseball fans.

The decision for Major League Baseball to move the 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta was a knee-jerk reaction to a public policy dispute that should be reconsidered promptly. Not only will this decision be detrimental to the community of Atlanta, to Atlanta Braves fans, and to the Atlanta Braves organization, but it will also be detrimental to all of Major League Baseball, its teams, and most importantly its fans.

It is no secret that our nation currently has deep political divisions. Politics has crept into nearly every aspect our lives and for many, if not most of us, baseball is an escape from that constant barrage.

America’s pastime is a unifying experience that brings people of all different backgrounds together. It is an opportunity for all of us to put our differences aside, to remove our red and blue jerseys in exchange for the jerseys of our favorite players and teams. It is a place where the only things that divide us are the friendly rivalries among ball clubs and the close calls that can’t be clearly determined with instant replay.

Major League Baseball’s decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta effectively politicizes the game, it contributes to the political divisions of our nation by expanding politics into baseball, and it destroys the great escape from the trials and tribulations that so many of us face in our everyday lives.

While the reactions of the undersigned range from disappointment to anger, and everything in between, we are unified in demanding that Major League Baseball keep politics out of baseball.

Please do not let political organizations and interests pressure Major League Baseball into changing its operations based on political disputes. Those disputes should be resolved by duly elected officials, legislative bodies, and the citizens of our country in City Halls, State Capitols, and the United States Capitol in accordance with the United States Constitution.

Please renounce the decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta. Not only has this decision angered and disappointed countless baseball fans, but it will have an immeasurable financial impact on the community of Atlanta, its citizens, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and so many others that have been planning for this tremendous opportunity for years.

Reversing this decision will certainly upset some, but the undersigned believe that the majority of baseball fans want Major League Baseball to keep politics out of baseball. Failure to reverse this decision not only risks pushing Atlanta Braves fans away from Major League Baseball, but it also risks pushing fans of other ball clubs away from Major League Baseball as well. Losing these fans will ultimately result in the loss of viewership, the loss of attendance at games, and the loss of revenue for Major League Baseball and its affiliated ball clubs.

Reversing the decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta would be a display of courage that would send a signal to other aspects of our society that it is okay to stand up to the pressure of political organizations, movements, and interests that seek to extort retribution for public policy disputes outside of the political arena.

In this time of deep political division in our nation, Major League Baseball has an opportunity to lead the way in providing a unifying space that allows people of all walks of life to come together and enjoy the game of baseball – free from the fog of politics.

Keeping politics out of baseball is not only good for Major League Baseball, it is good for the affiliated ball clubs, for the communities that they serve, and most importantly – it is good for the fans.

Mr. Commissioner, please keep the All-Star Game in Atlanta and politics out of baseball.

Sincerely,
The undersigned
