Call to action! Email Mayor Hillary Schieve to call special meeting; occupation statement release

Jun 3, 2021 —

Friends,

Bewteen this online petition and signatures, over 1000 people are standing together in opposition to the City sanctioned sweeps of our unsheltered community members.

We are writing to urge you to email Mayor Hillary Schieve (mayor@reno.gov) and request that “she calls a special meeting with an agendized item to stop the sweeps to be voted on by the council”.

And then to begin emailing ALL Reno City Council Members “demanding a vote in favor of stopping the sweeps” (Ward 1 Jenny Brekhus brekhusj@reno.gov; Ward 2 Naomi Duerr duerrn@reno.gov; Ward 3 Oscar Delgado delgadoo@reno.gov, Ward 4 Bonnie Weber weberb@reno.gov, Ward 5 Neoma Jardon jardonn@reno.gov) and At-Large representative Devon Reese (reesed@reno.gov).

As a Ward 3 constituent, I kept wondering, as my friends were harassed and displaced at Fisherman’s Park and Wells, where is Oscar Delgado? I wonder today as N. Edison is being swept, as we occupy the Believe Plaza in solidarity with our unhoused neighbors without the safety to protest. May this call to action, encourage our representatives to bear witness to the harm of their ineffective policy and start showing up for their Reno constituents and community.

We are releasing too, our statement declaring an occupation in opposition to the sweeps that began yesterday, June 2, 2021 at 8:00 AM at the Believe Plaza.

“Standing on stolen Numu and Wašišiw land, we stand in solidarity with all of our unhoused neighbors who are regularly met with the violence of eviction by our local government and police departments. We stand in solidarity with our friends at N. Edison and are strongly opposed to their forceful removal on June 2, 2021 at 8:00 AM. With shelters near capacity or inaccessible to specific groups, and the Nevada Cares Campus Safe Camp still unopened, we have no answers from our local government of where people are supposed to go. As concerned community members who are opposed to this violence, we are peacefully protesting on behalf of the most vulnerable in our community, and we will occupy at the Believe Plaza until the sweeps are stopped and demands for dignified solutions are met.

Thank you for your continued support and solidarity!

Sincerely,
