Despite attempt to meet with city officials, sweeps scheduled to continue

Jun 2, 2021 —

Thank you for your support in protecting our unsheltered neighbors. This afternoon, we delivered 728 signatures to the Reno City Clerk, Mayor Schieve, Mayor Lawson, City Manager Doug Thornley, County Manager Eric Brown, representatives on the Community Homelessness Advisory Board, including Neoma Jardon, Oscar Delgado, Kristopher Dahir, Alexis Hill, and Bob Lucey, board members of the Truckee River Flood Management Authority (TRFMA) (that owns the property on which the Edison Camps sit and which has as recently as April, 2020 been used a site for emergency housing), including Vaughn Hartung, Donald Abbott, and Naomi Duerr, TRFMA Executive Director E. George Robinson,  and Reno Chief of Police Jason Soto.

Despite attempts to schedule a meeting to discuss our demands and more compassionate, public health oriented solutions, the city plans to continue with the schedule sweep of North Edison tomorrow, beginning at 8:00 AM. There on interlocal land owned by the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, and Washoe County, over 60 unhoused neighbors will encounter law enforcement and the impossible question of where to go, in over 90 degree heat. As of 7:00 PM this evening, OUR Place and the Nevada Cares Campus are at fully capacity for women; there is no available space for couples at the NCC; the bed (most of which are top bunks, inaccessible to those living with disability) availability for men at the NCC stands at 37.

We cannot allow the violence of displacement and the criminalization of poverty to continue. Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 2, 2021), at 10:00 AM, the Reno City Council meets in the council chambers (1 East First St), in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began over 14 months ago. Please consider attending tomorrow to publicly express your opposition to the sweeps. You may also submit public comment through the online public comment form at www.Reno.Gov/PublicComment or emailing CityClerk@reno.gov. It is currently too late for comments received via voicemail to be entered into the record.

Anyone interested in more information about the sweeps and current conditions at the Edison encampment, please join us in the BELIEVE plaza at 8:00 am for an informal discussion.

Rather than donating to change.org (we don't know where that money goes), if you are interested in making a monetary contribution to support rapid response, direct aid for our friends experiencing the violence of homelessness, please visit @RenoHeartYou's https://donorbox.org/camp-care-fund To support the long-term work of the organization that has embraced "Housing First" and humanity from the start, please donate to the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality (R.I.S.E.) at http://www.renoinitiative.org/donate/ And to support local bail funds, please donate to the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) at https://planevada.org/donate/ To organize in-kind donations, please text or call 603-491-4136.

Thank you for your continued support and solidarity!
