The photo is an image we don’t want to see (the driver of the vehicle in photo died). Yet the probability of this type of accident is high on NSW roads.

The highest number of accidents in Metropolitan areas in NSW (Statistics from NSW Safe Roads) is Rear End accidents.

Heavy Vehicle operators/drivers require a longer stopping distance than cars due to the weight of the vehicles. Cars constantly decide to change lanes into a Heavy Vehicles path reducing the braking distance significantly on approach to intersections. Putting the risk of rear end accident higher.

What is proposed is the following:

*Solid lines marked for the distance a heavy vehicle requires to brake effectively given the sign posted speed for the road and the heaviest allowable weight permitted to travel on the road, on multilaned intersections.

*Laws to reinforce the required braking space.
