Why can’t most black people swim?

According to MySwimPro, 64% of black children do not know how to swim, and the drowning rate compared to white children is 5.5x higher. In the mid-1900s, a lot of beaches and pools in America were only allowing white people in case there would be a fight between both the races. But the black people didn’t like this. In 1964, they jumped into a hotel pool which was segregated. The manager of the hotel was not happy and decided to pour acid into the pool so that the activists would leave. This helped the Civil Rights Act in 1964. After that, pools started to close instead of letting both races swim. This caused a lot of white only and private pools in rich neighborhoods. And because of this, most parents who were black, didn’t teach their kids how to swim. Also, if a parent doesn’t know how to swim, there was a 13% chance that their child will learn to swim. This is still true. So, when their children had kids later, those kids would most likely not learn to swim. Some children know how to swim and others don’t. Some children want to learn how to swim and others don’t want to learn how to swim.
Today, pools don’t segregate between race, but black people don’t have the same economic opportunities as white people do. So, they might not have enough money for swimming lessons, or a ride to the swimming pool.

What are the basics of swimming and why might you be afraid of swimming?

You need to be able to breathe underwater without stressing out too much. Floating in the water is how you get started with learning the 2 main strokes in swimming: freestyle and backstroke. Freestyle swimming is when you lie on your stomach in the water, and you flutter kick both your feet to propel forward, while your arms reach ahead into the water and pull back alternatively. Backstroke swimming is when you lie on your back in the water, and while your legs are close together, you kick from your hips this time, not your knees like in freestyle. And again, your arms will be reaching back into the water and pulling back inside alternating each side. People who have never swam or been in a water body/swimming pool before will most likely have a fear of drowning because of inexperience. Another reason could be how the feeling of being in water is different of being on land. You feel lighter in water, and it is like gravity has decreased. If someone has a fear of water, they can start swimming with baby steps. That can be like just getting your feet wet in water, and slowly letting yourself get deeper in the water, or practicing breathing underwater. So next time you’re afraid of going into the water, remember, there are many people just like you, and it is easy to overcome it.
