Danielle Miller started this petition to Magnolia ISD

Hello! My name is Danielle and I get the honor to be the mother and biggest advocate for my non binary 11 year old child.

What’s non binary you ask? Well let me explain from our experience. My child does not feel they are a boy or a girl. They have characteristics of both but saying they are a boy just does not feel right. They are gender fluid. They feel they are both and at some points neither.

Well what’s their sexual orientation? Well, they are 11. And It’s all gross to them (ew cooties) and this has nothing to do with their self identification.

Why I am talking about this?
My child started school this week through the Magnolia ISD school district. The principal called me to let me know that according to the districts dress code, my child would have to cut their beautiful long hair. It is kept well groomed, clean and always out of their face. When asked if we can put it in a pony tail, the principal said that was still in violation of the dress code.
After reading through the antiquated, sexist and homophobic dress code, their father and I, quickly made meetings with the assistant principal, principal and director of secondary education at ISD, to discuss this matter further. We were hit with road blocks at every meeting. Despite our child being non binary, they have to adhere to the boys dress code and cut their hair or they will have to sit in ISS until they get a hair cut.
They are punishing my child for freely expressing who they identify as. This is clearly discrimination. This is in violation of their rights as an LGBTQ human.
I have meetings with two lawyers that would like to take on this case on Monday morning. However, it is past the deadline of having to cut their hair. My child is a sweet child who has an incredible moral compass. Sitting in ISS would be detrimental to their mental health and quite frankly I do not want my child to feel that they did anything wrong.
Our situation is just one of many families that are discriminated and rights are being violated by this dress code.
