What is tradition? A tradition is a long-established custom or belief that has been passed on from one generation to another. For years, Maggie Walker has had a long-standing tradition of Spirit Week, which falls the week leading up to homecoming. However, this year, we, as a student body, are distraught over the administration's decision to take away our tradition of commons decoration and the cross country vs. field hockey game during the Fall Pep Rally. These two traditions are enjoyable, engaging, and defining staples of Maggie Walker Spirit Week. Now, I am sure you are wondering: why would the administrators of Maggie Walker do away with these time-honored traditions? Well, they say that commons decoration is wasteful and messy. Although this statement contains some truth, this issue can be easily solved by greater rules and regulations by the administration that limit waste and forced classes to be devoted to cleaning up properly. No one has been injured, nothing has been seriously damaged, and students spend their own time and money on decorations because they want to. Looking at all of these factors, the student body needs to have a say and stand up for our beliefs and longstanding love for the decoration of the common which faces imminent destruction. Thank you for your time and please sign if you feel as strongly as we do about protecting our Maggie Walker traditions.
