Johnathan Dehner started this petition to Madison County mayors

The lockdown has gone on long enough; the people of Madison County are ready to get back to work and get back to normality, responsibly.

It isn’t acceptable to restrict liberties and to group the entirety of the state of Illinois in with Cook County. Look at what the state of Missouri is doing. Mr. Parsons realizes that a vast majority of their state, like Illinois, are rural areas and not likely to experience a large number of infections related to Covid-19. Those areas have relaxed policies that are at least a step in the right direction for the country. Missouri and Mike Parsons are showing great leadership and leading by example. This is what I am asking of you.

Mayor John Kahl of East Peoria recently announced that he will not be following the guidelines of Governor Pritzker, but he would instead implement his own phased-in, safe, reopening of the state. A date has been set for restaurants to open at 50% capacity, “non-essential” barbershops, salons, gyms, and retail establishments will be open with limitations, and social distancing guidelines. I urge you to look into something along these lines because the people of Madison County need hope and something to come back to once it’s all said and done.

“At the end of the day, it’s all going to come down to personal responsibility,” John Kahl said. Trust the people who elected you as leaders of our communities to be safe and be responsible for ourselves and others. If people are still afraid when we reopen, they will stay at home, but please let the rest of the people and businesses make that choice for ourselves.
