Petitioning Madison County, Kentucky Fiscal Court

Preserve Historic Downtown Richmond

The Madison County Historical Society would like to ask the Madison County Fiscal Court to consider options for renovating and reusing the Miller House and Old Creamery Building on the courthouse square in downtown Richmond, Kentucky. Both buildings are in the Downtown Richmond Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Miller House was built in the early 1800s by the son of the founder of Richmond. Besides being a residence and possibly a tavern, it has also served as city hall, Richmond Police Station, and various other offices. It was built using a style of brickwork rare in Madison County.

The Old Creamery building was originally built as a double house with Flemish Bond brickwork about the same time as the Miller House. Since then it has been used as a post office, a creamery and a law office.

Both buildings are unique to downtown Richmond and if preserved and re-purposed would enhance the downtown area and would benefit cultural tourism in the county.
