Immediately Remove Confederate Monument at Madison County Courthouse

Violet Edwards started this petition to Madison County Commission

On June 10, 2020, the Madison County Commission voted to remove the Confederate monument that sits on the west side of the Madison County Courthouse. Instead of offering solutions, the commission has asked the State of Alabama for permission to act, requesting a waiver they know they can never get.

Therefore, we must roll up our sleeves and do the work our commission will not. This petition calls on elected leaders to take action now and introduce the A.C.T.I.O.N resolution to the county commission. The resolution is a simple clearly written measure that would remove the statue from the court house and gift it to the City of Huntsville.

The City of Huntsville has passed a resolution to accept the monument, provide a location, and support its continued upkeep. The Violet Edwards campaign has joined efforts with the Tennessee Valley Progressive Alliance (TVPA) to demand that this resolution be taken up.  Between the TVPA and additional groups of citizens, the funding is in place to pay the state fine and relocation cost.

By signing this petition, you are asking county leadership to remove the statue by taking up the ACTION resolution and turn it over to the city for preservation. You can call it civil disobedience. You can call it righting a wrong. Let’s agree to call it progress.

Signatures collected will be presented to the Madison County Commission.
