I Vote Madison started this petition to City Council Represenative Madison Alabama City Council

Communication leads to stronger communities, and making public meetings more accessible to residents increases communication. Livestreaming public meetings to all available social media channels, recording and archiving them indefinitely, and offering virtual public comments is an easy, low-cost way to improve communication. Madison, Alabama is a fantastic place to call home, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t areas where we can improve.

I Vote Madison believes that every citizen deserves to be heard and that pathways to civic engagement and participation should be free of hurdles. We envision a Madison that is shaped by empowered, engaged, and active citizens. Increased communication allows citizens to stay aware of topics related to Madison and provides a better understanding of the decisions our local government officials make. With this knowledge, citizens are able to contribute to their community in a more timely and effective manner.

I, Citizen of Madison Alabama, petition our local government to livestream, record and archive all public meetings and make them available through madisonal.gov indefinitely. I also request virtual options for public comments.

Top 5 Reasons to archive videos of public meetings:

  • Out of the top 15 most populated cities in Alabama, Madison is the only city that doesn't archive video recordings. Over 30 smaller Alabama cities also livestream, record and archive their public meetings.
  • A person's circumstance, whether that be a busy life, sickness, disability, parenthood, etc...shouldn't prevent them from engaging with their local government.
  • Meeting minutes often omit significant details including the disposition and topics of public comments or the discussion relevant to why council members voted the way they did.
  • Taxpayers have already paid for the cameras and software needed to record the meetings. Social media sites used by other municipalities allow for recording and citizen comments free of charge.
  • If more cameras and equipment are needed. There are $2 million dollars of CARES Act money available in the general fund.

Madison has been called the digital capital of Alabama and has the highest proportion of engineers in the US. One would expect that a city like Madison would embrace technology to provide greater transparency and increase civic engagement. Whenever public policy is decided, the public should easily be able to access livestreams, view video recordings indefinitely, and offer comments virtually. Virtual public comments are essential to a modern democratic process. This is a win-win for everyone in Madison, Alabama. The actions listed above are nonpartisan and have been requested by members of our community for many years. The time for transparency is now!
