La dernière grande zone boisée du Plateau à Hull est sur le point d'être complètement rasée pour un autre projet de construction de complexe immobilier par le groupe Junic. Le Parc Central se situe au 225, rue de Bruxelles, soit l’une des rues longeant le boulevard du Plateau. La zone est protégée depuis plus de 10 ans pour sa valeur écologique en tant que zone tampon entre la ville et le parc de la Gatineau. En d’autres mots, celle-ci protège le secteur des inondations, qui sont de plus en plus fréquentes à Gatineau. Les milieux boisés sont connus pour limiter les crues des eaux et empêcher l'érosion des sols.

À la séance du conseil municipal de Gatineau ayant eu lieu le 18 et 19 février dernier, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, conseillère municipale, a proposé et voté en faveur du projet qu'elle a qualifié de "développement durable". Par définition, un développement durable est un développement répondant aux besoins présents sans compromettre la capacité des générations futures à répondre aux leurs, prenant en compte le caractère indissociable de la dimension environnementale. Alain Pilon, vice-président de l’Association des résidents du Plateau et ancien conseiller de la Ville de Gatineau, s'est présenté à la période de questions pour tenter de comprendre comment un terrain, protégé par le même conseil pendant 10 ans, n'avait maintenant "plus aucune valeur écologique", tel qu’inscris dans le rapport descriptif du projet. 

Depuis quelques mois, les animaux sauvages se promènent dans les rues du Plateau, alors que leur habitat naturel disparaît graduellement. Plusieurs espèces animales, qui habitent le parc de la Gatineau et les environs, sont aujourd'hui menacés, entre autre à cause de ces projets de construction non-durables;

-Le petit bonglios,

-La pyguargue à tête blanche,

-La pie-grièche migratrice,

-Le pic à tête rouge,

-La rainette faux-grillion de l'ouest,

-La tortue des bois,

-Le faucun pelerin anatum,

-Le garrot d'islande.

The last large wooded area at Plateau in Hull is about to be completely razed to the ground for another apartment construction project by the Junic Group. The Parc Central is located at 225 Bruxelles Street, one of the streets along Boulevard du Plateau. The area has been protected for more than 10 years for its ecological value as a buffer zone between the city and Gatineau Park. In other words, it protects the area from flooding, which is increasingly frequent in Gatineau. Wooded areas are known to limit flooding and prevent soil erosion.

At the Gatineau municipal council meeting, held on February 18th and 19th, Municipal Councillor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette proposed and voted in favour of the project, which she qualified of "sustainable development". By definition, a sustainable development is a development that meets the present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, taking into account the inseparable nature of the environmental dimension. Alain Pilon, vice-president of the Residents Association of Plateau and former Gatineau City Councillor, came to the question period to try to understand how a piece of land, protected by the same council for 10 years, now "no longer has any ecological value", as written in the project’s descriptive report.

For the past few months, wildlife has been wandering the streets of Plateau, while their natural habitat is gradually disappearing. Several animal species that inhabit the Gatineau Park and the surrounding area are now threatened, in part because of these unsustainable construction projects;

-The Least Bittern,

-The Bald Eagle,

-The Loggerhead Shrike,

-The Red-headed Woodpecker,

-Western Chorus Frog,

-The Wood Turtle,

-The Peregrine Falcon,

-The Barrow’s Goldeneye.

It is time to say NO to construction projects of this kind, that threaten the fauna and flora of our city. Sign this petition if you wish to support our efforts to prevent this project from taking place at the expense of an important protected area.
