Make Polnoon Estate Safe for Kids. Lower the Speed Limit and Introduce Traffic Calming
This petition had 156 supporters
The current design of the Polnoon Estate which is supposed to encourage a "pedestrian first environment" has failed due to the inappropriate 30mph speed limit and lack of traffic calming measures.
A 'shared space zone' with vehicles doing 30mph amongst pedestrians, and with homes with children opening directly onto this speed zone, is unfit and unsafe for purpose. The limit should be reduced to 10mph before a child fatality occurs.
The East Renfrewshire Local Development Plan adopted in June 2015 identifies key messages within its Residential Street Design guidance. These include:
"Safety Matters – in all design solutions, the safety of all users of a street must be considered."
"People Matter ‐ consider pedestrian movement before vehicle movement. Ensure good connectivity."
"Street design and housing layout should primarily consider the needs of
pedestrians before other road users."
The Scottish Government boasts:
"At the heart of the vision for Polnoon, has been to design a safe place where pedestrians will have priority over cars allowing for the creation of an attractive streetscape to be enjoyed by everyone."
The Community within Polnoon Estate, Eaglesham are campaigning for these guidelines to be adhered to and these promises honoured in order for our children to be safe on the streets. We want action to be taken before an accident happens. Traffic calming measures and a lower speed limit must be implemented for the safety of our kids.
