Sack Alan Jones and Support Jacinda Ardern's leadership on climate change

In a shocking and degrading comment about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Alan Jones appealed to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison to "shove a sock down her throat."

"Here she is preaching on global warming and saying that we’ve got to do something about climate change,” Jones said.  "I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat."  During his on-air rant, he went on to call PM Jacinda Ardern a "clown", a "joke" and a "lightweight."

The Fijian PM Frank Bainimarama and former PM Malcolm Turnbull swiftly condemned the misogynistic attack against a global woman leader.  By contrast, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was slow and mealy-mouthed in voicing his "disappointment."

Jones says he was "misinterpreted". But we know he has a long history of hateful, violent speech against women in power, particularly when they demonstrate leadership on global issues like climate change.   Most disgraceful were his comments that former Prime Minister Julia Gillard should be "put into a chaff bag and thrown into the sea".  Inciting violence against women in powerful roles is designed to intimidate and diminish women in leadership and silence their voices on the political stage.

The Australian Government-funded 'Our Watch' has shown that gender inequality is linked to the occurrence of violence against women.  They have also shown the clear relationship between attitudes, 'jokes' and language and actual violence against women.   Every week, men kill women in Australia: on average, one woman dies at the hands of a former or current male partner. In the past, companies have pulled advertising from his Radio 2GB spot but it is clear that more needs to be done.

We call on Macquarie Media to sack Alan Jones and Nine Entertainment to cancel his contract.  He does not deserve the airtime and platform to spread hate against women and disinformation on climate change.

Enough is enough.  It is time for Alan Jones to be held accountable.
