Education is by definition- learning about all aspects of an issue, experience or historical moment. Educational institutions, (and one would hope/expect a free media/press) are the means by which we can best understand the world, its complexity, levels of human achievement, challenges etc. Not having academic freedom is accepting the risk that an individual, a society, a nation, will be making decisions and value judgements on at best,.. partial information and at worst,..in ignorance.

As I said in my Keynote: Borders/border control/Governments are having an impact on conferences in particular, and Academic freedom in general. This obstructs people from attending conferences; and doing their work as academics. The Paradigm Wars of the 21st century are not between academic networks, but between Academia and Government. This is an important and pressing issue to address.

Elements of the Academy are under attack from Governments and this needs to be curtailed. When we lose the right to be critical of these lunatic times.and the actors who dominate them, we go to a dark place.

I believe that education should be without borders of censorship. I believe that academia must be open to everyone, and I am for eradication of borders which are stretching their hands to the production and reproduction and dissemination of knowledge.
