Macalester College: Reject the 2012 proposed MN constitutional amendment limiting marriage
This petition made change with 1,225 supporters!
As members of the Macalester College community, we urge the college to follow the lead of other Minnesota higher education institutions and publicly reject the proposed amendment to the Minnesota Constitution limiting marriage rights on the November 2012 ballot. The amendment is antithetical to the college's values and would limit the freedoms of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other members of the Macalester community.
In its statement of purpose and belief, Macalester affirms its intention to create an "environment that values the diverse cultures of our world and recognizes our responsibility to provide a supportive and respectful environment for students, staff and faculty of all cultures and backgrounds." Publicly opposing the marriage amendment reinforces the creation a supportive and respectful environment; staying silent is an affront to such an environment.
We affirm that this issue is not an issue of political opinion but of civil and human rights and respect. We support all Minnesotans and Americans who want equal rights, freedoms, opportunities, dignity, and legal protections. Macalester has a long standing commitment to maintaining a LGBT-friendly environment, and should maintain that commitment by publicly rejecting the proposed constitutional amendment.
Some alumni and current students have chosen to indicate their class year in the comments section.
