In order to hold police accountable for their actions and to rebuild public confidence, a citizen review board should be established in Massachusetts. A review board is an institution that allows citizen representatives to investigate alleged misconduct by the police.

Bill H.2068, which would establish an independent review board of police conduct, has stalled in committee. We urge members of the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security to move the bill forward and to work to establish an independent review board.

On May 25, George Floyd was killed by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department sparking outrage and protests across the country. Boston and other municipalities across the state have seen daily protests demanding action be taken to address police brutality. An independent review board will help us accomplish this.

It is essential that we establish independent oversight of the police. When there are questions regarding the actions of a police officer, we must have a way to perform independent investigations. Until now, we have allowed the police to police themselves and this is one of the reasons that George Floyd is dead.

The people of Massachusetts deserve justice.
