Allow Students in Lynbrook Public Schools to Leave Their Cameras Off
Why this petition matters

Students and teachers alike understand the difficulties of learning remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, students should not be forced to keep their cameras on during a seven-hour school day, simply for attendance purposes. Many students may be uncomfortable or anxious with their face being on camera for their entire class to see, or other students' homes may not be fit to be presented in the background of a WebEx call. Additionally, students who are having legitimate technology or connection issues are being shamed or accused of lying about it, and as a result, some teachers are asking these students to unmute their microphones for the duration of the class. This is absolutely unacceptable, as the background noise can be distracting to other students, especially those who are neurodivergent. Lynbrook BOE, please allow students in the Lynbrook Public School District to turn their cameras off during WebEx calls for remote learning. A simple "here" or "present" from each student at the beginning of each class should be plenty sufficient for attendance purposes.
