Despite a long history of radical racism, Republican Steve Smith was elected for the Republican Party's county committee for Luzerne County, PA for a 4-year term.
Now as a committee member, he will have a say in who gets to be Luzerne GOP's County Chairman and Executive Committee. The mere concept of letting a violent extremist be glorified in such a manner is unacceptable and is shameful to Pennsylvania, regardless of where your political stance is.
According to SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center), Smith has been active within hate groups such as American Third Position, Keystone United and the Council of Conservative Citizens. He also has a former history with Aryan Nations and was a former leader of the National Association for the Advancement of White People.
"In March 2003, he and two other KSS members were arrested in Scranton for beating up Antoni Williams, a black man, using stones and chunks of pavement. Smith pleaded guilty to terrorist threats and ethnic intimidation and received a 60-day sentence and probation."
“We unequivocally denounce Mr. Smith and his abhorrent views and would like to make it clear that in no way do his personal views reflect the views of the Republican Party,” the Luzerne County Republican Committee said in a statement issued this week.
