Let's use the Lusaka, Zesco and Railway wayleaves to make safe cycle and footpaths
Why this petition matters
Lusaka has a growing vehicle population that will soon gridlock the new roads. Only 5% of the people has access to private cars. By building segregated cycle and footpaths we service a large and neglected community with infrastructure for now and the future. By using existing Zesco and railway wayleaves a huge number of people can be given a cheap, effective and healthy alternative to motorised transport.
Lusaka City Council are planning to turn Leopards Hill Road into a dual carriage way. This presents a real opportunity to improve the lot of pedestrians and cyclists.
Cycling and walking on Zambia's roads are risky occupations. Many are killed on the completion of new roads.
This city is flat, it doesn't rain for 8 months of the year. Cyclists and pedestrians who are the majority should to be encouraged as the roads are gridlocked and get worse.
Lusaka could join the city's of the future where active travel is encouraged, as good for health, the environment and society, by building proper cycling and walking infrastructure. This infrastructure needs to be kept separate from the main carriageway to the enhance safety for everyone.
