Smoking affects both the smoker and the people around them. The chemicals released by the cigarette smoke directly affects the smoker since it causes chronic lung diseases as time passes by. It may also damage the airways and the small air sacs inside the lungs. Specifically it can cause diseases such as emphysema, or the shortness of breath and difficulty exhaling, chronic bronchitis and the worst case lung cancer. On the other hand even non-smokers are affected, through the smoke from the burning end of the cigarette and the one breathed out by smokers can trigger different diseases such as severe asthma attacks, respiratory infection and even sudden infant death syndrome. Even reports have showed that since 1964, 2.5 million adults who were non smokers died because of second-hand smoking. That is why whether you smoke or not you should still be involved and affected because non one will be spared.

According to Patient Information (2012), quitting smoking will be difficult since cigarettes contain nicotine, a chemical which causes addiction to smokers. It stimulates the brain, wherein when one is a regular smoker, then the brain detects a low level of nicotine in the system, one will usually show the follow symptoms:

  • craving
  • anxiety
  • headaches
  • restlessness
  • hunger
  • difficulty with concentration

Also, carbon monoxide is one of the components of a cigarette. This chemical affects the capacity of the blood to carry oxygen. For instance, when a pregnant woman smokes, insufficient amount of oxygen will reach the growing baby. Also, smoking during pregnancy could cause miscarriages.

Though perceived to be difficult to avoid, one should strive and perform multiple attempts for the benefit of oneself and the society. According to Fiore (2008), one may attend counseling or take medications. In addition, one may perform activities or find a better addiction, such as eating candy whenever having the urge to smoke.
