Safe bicycle infrastructure must be considered essential investment by any government that is serious about reducing carbon emissions, traffic congestion, obesity, diabetes and ischaemic heart disease among its population.

A combination of rail and bike infrastructure is crucial to Melbourne’s future, especially in the big, flat North. Not-driving is a right, must be a part of transport planning, and must be delivered. Cyclists have a right to be safe.

Seems like plenty of room to build a dedicated cycling path. The problem is state government allocates a piddling amount to new cycling infrastructure. These paths are generally built as an after thought as part of major works with road/transport upgrades, although not always even then (example Camp Road level crossing removal failed to build Upfield Bike path extension to and under Camp Road)
