Help support building an outdoor Skatepark for Lufkin, Texas

This petition had 672 supporters

I am a parent in this community working to bring a public skatepark for our community's youth.  I have estimated that there are hundreds of kids in our town and surrounding areas that are passionate about skateboarding but have nowhere to do it safely.  The nearest skateboarding venues are within a 2 hour driving radius or farther, which makes it difficult for some to travel.  As it has been pointed out to me, Lufkin has 3 golf courses, 16 public parks and not a single designated skate area.  Help eliminate unwarranted police calls and undesired skate activity in prohibited areas!

I feel that this athletic drive should be supported by a safe, sanctioned place for these kids to exercise, socialize, and develop skills that will be useful throughout their lives.  I am dedicated to the process of making that happen but I need your help.  Not every child fits the mold of an all American athlete, band student or even future farmer... but all of them are very good at something and many are good at skateboarding.  As a parent of a skateboarder, I do not want to see any childs spirit be broken because they don't have an outlet to express something good about themselves.   When this happens children often resort to unhealthy choices,  that is why this skatepark is a much needed facility in our town.

By signing this petition, you will help bring us closer to our goal.  I want to show our community leaders the interest that exists for a skatepark.  Many business and community leaders are on board as well as hundreds of individuals.  The Lufkin community is clearly excited and eager to see this project succeed.  Be a part of that excitement by supporting our youth simply by signing this petition.  Historically, Lufkin has invested in recreational venues for such activities as football, basketball, tennis, swimming, etc.  Skateparks are relatively new to this part of the country even though the sport has been in existence and growing since the 1970s.

It is not a fair decision to pick and choose recreational opportunities for our youth, it portrays discriminatory and stereotypical attitude and we must make change for a better today!
