Stacie Martin started this petition to Representative Lucy McBath and

In May of 2020 an unarmed Black man by the name of George Floyd was arrested and murdered by a police officer in Minnesota.

At the time of his death, Mr. Floyd was handcuffed on the ground while the officer pressed his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck, thus choking him for minutes and resulting in his death. Mr. Floyd repeatedly screamed that he could not breathe and the officer, as well as the assisting officers, chose to do nothing to prevent his subsequent death.

This petition is for the following provisions to be entered into federal law:

  • Unnecessary force by a police officer against an unarmed citizen is a federal crime
  • An officer of the law using lethal force against an unarmed citizen resulting in death is a federal crime punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole
  • While under investigation, officer shall receive no pay while on leave
  • If found guilty of a brutality crime, the officer forfeits their pension
  • Detailed reports of police homicides will be be reported to state and federal officials and open for public record

These laws are requested for the following reasons:

  • Remove police brutality cases from the local precincts and state offices where they have unions and internal protections as police officers
  • Provide stiff and clear penalties under the law for police officers who engage in acts of brutality
  • Provide a deterrent for police officers to engage in acts of brutality
  • Provide a sense of security that officers will not continue to engage in acts of brutality
  • Sending all cases to the federal courts for prosecution and sentencing
