Please sign this petition if you agree that students at Sheridan College should be given the option to take courses remotely for the Winter 2022 semester!

On October 21, 2021, we received notice from Sheridan that we will be attending class full-time on campus effective January 10, 2022. The notice contained a link to a document issued by the Law Society of Ontario (“LSO”) listing only a few courses that require mandatory attendance in person and the remaining courses may continue to be offered virtually. Despite this, Sheridan College has decided that students must attend school 100% on campus.

Understandably, given the current Covid pandemic, many of us feel that we are being put in the unfortunate position of choosing between the health and safety of ourselves and our families, and our access to post-secondary education. We are requesting that Sheridan College offer this program as a hybrid, rather than strictly on campus for the following reasons:

  • In addition to the risk to our health and safety, the cold and flu season during the winter also poses a risk. This is because it can adversely affect the immune system and increase the chances of getting sick, thereby negatively impacting our academic success. Our concerns are further impacted by the fact that we would be returning to campus immediately after the holiday break, where it is reasonably foreseeable that there may be a spike in Covid cases, thus increasing our likelihood of exposure.
  • There are international students who are not in Canada due to travel restrictions; a transition to being on campus full time would make attending school an unattainable goal for these individuals. These burdens would be greatly minimized if Sheridan College adopted a hybrid delivery method.
  • We feel that the proven success of delivering this program virtually thus far, the current Covid rates, the uncertainty regarding the long-term efficacy of the vaccinations, and the uncertain potential need for vaccine booster shots, make being forced to be on campus full time unnecessarily risky. This imposes a great deal of stress on students who do not feel safe attending school in person any more than is absolutely required by LSO mandates.

Since the LSO has stated that all courses other than the six listed can remain virtual, we believe that there is no substantial reason for Sheridan College to deny our request.
