Today multiple national and local newspapers reported the homophobic, misogynistic, classist, racist and prejudicial comments made by the LSE men's rugby team in a freshers' leaflet distributed by team members on Friday. According to the Independent 'Members are encouraged to “pull a sloppy bird” on a night out and warned of questions for aspiring captains “about their sexual persuasion”'. The leaflet also makes xenophobic comments and references to polytechnic "scum".  I find this deplorable and upsetting, and, as an alumnus of the LSE AU, embarassing.

The team have apparently taken full responsibility for their action, though it is unclear what this responsibility entails. Whilst the team have apologised and LSE have stated that they are investigating several complaints, pressure must be put on the relevant bodies to ensure that this doesn't happen again within the AU, particularly as similar material has been distributed by the same team in previous years, and that they establish measures to abolish similar language and offences across campus.

Thus, this petition requests your support for preventing the offending members of the men's rugby team from competing this year, a move that would mirror the anti-discrimination policies of the sport's official regulatory bodies. This requires the university to put the effort in to determine who exactly was responsible. In addition, this petition requests that those responsible attend mandatory classes/sessions on equality held by an independent party, not the workshop on the negative impacts of "banter" proposed by the men's team.

This is not "banter", this is an offense. Please sign and share.
