Make Bystander Education Mandatory for All Loyola Students

We, the students of Loyola University Chicago, recognize the violence that happens on and around our campus every single day. We have seen the statistics. We are aware that 1 in 4 college women and 1 in 33 college men have survived a completed or attempted rape by the time they finish college and we are not ok with this. That is 300 women and over 25 men on our own campus every year and we pledge not to stand idly by. We are aware of these statistics, but we are also aware that statistics can change, which is why we write to you. When we came to Loyola, we all signed the Student Promise, vowing to “care for self, care for others, care for community” and we intend to make good on that promise. Our Jesuit education has taught us that true education isn’t just about the classroom, it’s about caring for the whole person. How better to ensure that our students are able to focus on academics as well as their personal and spiritual development than by providing a safe and accountable community in which to do just that? We are ready to be accountable to one another, we are ready to be active bystanders and build a stronger and safer community, but at present we do not have the tools. We need your help. We need all students to be trained in bystander intervention, one of the only programs that have proven to be successful in lowering these statistics that interrupt so many of the lives of the students on our campus and across the world. We are asking you to help us bring about this change for a safer campus and a more accountable student body by making Bystander Education mandatory for each Loyola Student. Please help us to change this culture of violence and make good on our promise to one another.
