Sylvia Rodriguez started this petition to American Cancer Society

I am asking for your support in signing this petition to lower the recommended screening age for colorectal/colon cancer from 45 to 35. Yes, that is a ten year difference, however, early detection is one of the most significant ways to beat this type of cancer.

I lost my soulmate, Byron Kirack this year to this horrible disease. Byron was just 39 years old when he was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. He never thought that the symptoms he was dealing with such as stomach pains and bowel changes could be cancer. He was “too young” to think it was cancer or that it couldn’t happen to him because that happens “when you are 50 or older”.
For seven years he endured countless treatments that effected his daily living which then impacted his loved ones around him.
One screening test, a colonoscopy, is much less painful and stressful than Byron’s 7 years of nonstop radiation, chemotherapy, medications and immunotherapy. No one should have to go through this physical and emotional pain.

To the American Cancer Society, I’m asking that we lower the age for recommended screening to 35. Along with this, hospitals and medical facilities should educate and inform people of any unusual symptoms that may warrant a screening. Today, there are still hospitals that are still recommending a screening at age 50.

If Byron’s first screening would have been done at 35, he would still be here today. If people are not well informed about this by their hospitals, doctors etc.  and changes do not take place, sadly, there will be many cases like Byron’s. If you or a loved one are experience bowel changes or pain, please see your doctor about a colonoscopy or cologuard test.

Please share this petition and help lower the screening age. Let’s help people live a longer life where the time we have on this earth can be spent with the people we love the most rather than spend it in hospitals.
Byron would be proud if this change took place as it would save countless lives.
Thank you all for your support and for signing and/or sharing this petition.
