Amy Shah-George started this petition to Lower Moreland Township School Board

In light of Diwali Celebrations today, we created this petition because we feel Diwali should be recognized as a Holiday on the school calendar.

Diwali is an Indian Festival of Lights celebrated by over a billion people in India and around the world every year. Although it is a Hindu festival it can be celebrated by anyone as it spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.

With the changing demographics, Lower Moreland Township School District (LMTSD) needs to embrace the diversity and recognize Diwali as a formal holiday that is part of it's school calendar of days off. There are many students who take the day off and miss school work which is not ideal.

As some religious holidays of other significant faiths are being recognized in our community, our argument, which has been made across the nation, and in our neighboring districts is, Diwali too should be equally recognized.

In an effort to recognize the cultural diversity that is so prominent in the LMTSD Schools and with the new focus on Diversity and Inclusion, the LMTSD Schools should recognize our culture and tradition and make Diwali an official holiday.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION AND LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR OUR COMMUNITY.  Let's take an initiative to be recognized.
