Ban Wakesurfing on the Colorado River arm of Lake LBJ
Why this petition matters
Ban the sport of wakesurfing on the Colorado River arm of Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, beginning at the Highway 1431 bridge. The river is too narrow for responsible wakesurfing, with wakes creating unsafe boating conditions, property damage to retaining walls and boat docks, and impairing the use of the river by responsible boat operators.
There are plenty of places to practice this sport on larger parts of the lake. It is difficult for two wake surfers to pass each other while maintaining safe distances from docks and shore. Many boats completely ignore the 50 foot distance requirement from existing buoys along the river. Wake surfing associations generally recommend a 200 foot distance, which is difficult or impossible on most parts of the river. Add dozens of boats to the scenario, and the requirement to maintain distance between each. Texas boating laws require operators to be responsible for their wakes, and it is literally impossible to comply on this stretch of the river.
