Lower Allen Twp & Cumberland Co. Commissioners, West Shore School Dist.: Deny Ahold, USA's request for tax relief for its meatpacking plant

Ahold, USA, owner of Giant Foods has started construction of a meatpacking plant next to the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill. Ahold has asked the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners and the Lower Allen Township Board of Commissioners to exempt them from paying property taxes for a number of years. Ahold is expected to make the same request of the West Shore School District Board of Directors.
Ahold should not be granted its requested tax relief. Ahold obviously already concluded that constructing the plant is a good business decision as the company did not seek tax relief before starting construction. The meatpacking plant will burden the township, county and school district with additional expenses in the form of a substantial increase in traffic which will necessitate improvements to Lisburn Road and new traffic controls at the intersections of Rossmoyne Road and Lisburn Road and Spangler's Mill and Lisburn Road. It will lead to greater demands on emergency response and police departments.
The West Shore School District cannot afford to forgo much-needed revenue in this time of budget and educational program cutting.
If Ahold receives its requested tax relief, the taxpayers of Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County and the West Shore School District will ultimately pay to cover the extra costs generated by the construction of the meatpacking plant.
Ahold can afford to pay its fair share of property taxes. Let our local elected officials know that they should deny Ahold's request for tax relief. Sign the petition and pass it on.
