Bin the Sexist Litter Campaign

This petition had 222 supporters

Cleaner Essex is a coalition working to reduce littering in Essex.  The coalition includes Essex County Council, Braintree District Council, RP2 Global Media, the Highways Agency, McDonalds, KFC and Dominos.  Braintree District Council have been the lead partner for Cleaner Essex in a litter reduction campaign that started in 2014 and has been repeated and expanded for 2015.

The campaign shows pictures of women with the slogan "Bin your litter, it's a PRETTY quick thing to" (sic) and pictures of men with the slogan "Bin your litter, it's the SMART thing to do."

This ad campaign is both sexist and derogatory, especially to women.  This is not a commercial ad campaign, it is a Local Authority campaign and as such falls under the Local Authority's responsibility to equality and diversity, including the protected characteristic of sex, referred to in the Equality Act 2010.

It is of great concern that complaints from local residents were not taken seriously in 2014 when the campaign was first used, that responses to local residents further perpetuated stereotypes and prejudices about women and men and that it has been not only repeated, but expanded for 2015.

This petition requests that the ad campaign is taken down and that the Cleaner Essex Campaign and its partner organisations commit to undertake gender awareness training.
