For far too many generations, good people in Louisiana have lived in a parish named after one of the leading figures in our nation's Civil War, a leader who's cause was on the wrong side of human rights and history. We as a people cannot continue to honor the name of ANY PERSON who took up a cause in favor of the ownership of human lives. Slavery is a blight upon American history, and the fondness that many people still have towards the leaders who deemed that people are property should be a thing of the past. Jefferson Davis should not be honored with such distinction. Like the many monuments coming down all across this land that have become symbols of WHITE SUPREMACY, symbols meant to INTIMIDATE a minority population, the name of Jefferson Davis has no place of honor among good, kind, and just people. I humbly put forth that this name be REMOVED from this great Parish, and be replaced with a name more befitting to the wonderful and diverse population who call it home today.
