Remember our priorities: fix the salary scale, improve bandwidth, reduce elementary class sizes, expand FDK

Over the last six months, members of the public have spoken to the School Board and the Board of Supervisors in support of our schools. The School Board listened, but the Board of Supervisors did not. Due to the lack of funding from the Board of Supervisors, the School Board is now tasked with deciding where to cut $38 million from the proposed school budget from next year. As you do so, please remember our priorities:
- Fix the salary scale to keep compensation both competitive and fair.
- Improve technology, especially internet bandwidth and old computers
- Reduce elementary class sizes, which are the highest in the metro area
- Expand full-day kindergarten to serve more at-risk students at four more schools: Forest Grove, Sterling, Meadowland, and Frederick Douglass.
You heard overwhelming support for these from the public at both School Board and Board of Supervisors' public hearings and emails to both boards. Pay our teachers what they deserve, fix the technology issues already plaguing our schools, begin reducing average elementary class size, and keep expanding full-day kindergarten to serve more at-risk students. These items should remain in your final budget.
