Ayrshire Farm located in Loudoun County in Upperville, VA.
has an operation of +/-350 pigs at any given time. The farm is owned and operated by Sandy Lerner and severely mismanaged by Large Livestock Manager Crystal Ritenour and the ethical consequences are undeniable. There is seemingly no animal husbandry and best management practices are ignored resulting in neglect, cruelty, and inhumane treatment. Animals are often withheld medication and necessary veterinary care resulting in a long slow painful death. Crystal Ritenour even makes excuses and defends physical abuse by her staff (kicking pigs, pulling them by their ears and tails).
Ayrshire Farm neglects and abuses their pigs and Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) the agency who gives the farm their "certified humane" label conducted several unannounced inspections resulted in the discovery of a "zillion" noncompliance issues, yet Ayrshire Farm remains Certified Humane. Certified Humane standards are mere suggestions and HFAC does not care if the participating farms are in compliance or not. A few months later a magazine article highlighting both Sandy Lerner and Adele Douglas was printed. The interview and photos were taken BEFORE the inspection by HFAC and the article was already in the works. To have immediately revoked Ayrshire's certified humane status or have reinspected Ayrshire Farm and seen no measures were taken to correct would have ruined this elbow rubbing pat each other on the back article about these two women. Knowing the amount Sandy Lerner has personally contributed to Humane Farm Animal Care would be an interesting number indeed.
Loudoun County Animal Services and the Loudoun County Commonwealth's Attorneys office have flipped flopped on this issue and the evidence I have presented. The owner of Ayrshire Farm is a prominent and wealthy woman in.our area and she wines and dines loudoun county authorities and animal services staff routinely in her mansion. They are not an unbiased party. LCAS refuses to have a veterinarian review this evidence to confirm medical treatment was withheld or if these issues were due to.poor animal husbandry practices.
the pigs (or this evidence) where they would have quickly come to.the conclusion these pigs were being withheld necessary medical care. LCAS refuses to work with licensed veterinarians in review of this case. Why? I was told by Chief Animal Control Officer Mark Stacks based on evidence I submitted Ayrshire Farm would be held accountable for this abuse and neglect retroactively...with no limitations. I was recently told by Loudoun County Animal Services Director Tim Koenig no criminal.charges will be filed and the investigation in closed.
The owner Sandy Lerner has kept Crystal Ritenour in her position as Large Livestock Manager in light of the obvious neglect and Crystal Ritenour has kept all.her staff (despite the obvious neglect and witnessed abuse).
This is unacceptable. The abuse needs to stop and the parties responsible held accountable.
