Justice For Jialan Yan and Bijia Zhang, Send the Reckless Driver to Prison
Why this petition matters
Jialan Yan and Bijia Zhang were killed by Ana Karen Asencio, an unlicensed and uninsured motorist on March 12, 2021 in the City of Lakewood. Two beautiful women were only 24 years old and were freshly out of college. They were the only child of both families. They both were so talented, kind, and had a bright future ahead of them. Their dreams of becoming accountants and many other aspirations had been forever shattered by this tragic event.
The driver was looking at the cellphone and talking to her passenger when she crashed into those two women on the marked crosswalk. She dragged their bodies for about 180 feet. There was no brake mark on the site. Not to mention that driver lied to the police officer that she possessed a valid driver’s license when she did not. Furthermore, the driver OBTAINED a driver license after she killed two innocent young women.
We are very disappointed that the Los Angeles County District Attorney merely charged the driver for two misdemeanors (192(c) and 148), which means that she will not face any jail time and will mostly likely walk away like nothing had happened. The Lakewood Police and the Los Angeles County District Office did not contacted any victim's families, friend, or neighbors to have a thorough investigation before pressing charges against the driver.
This is injustice and absolutely unacceptable for both victims’ families and friends. The driver needs to be justicely charged as Gross Negligence. Please sign this petition and also take action by calling Los Angeles County District Office for the driver to be charged as Gross Negligence, case #LC 1BL02325-01: 562-804-8085
