Marcella Zwirn started this petition to Los Angeles Unified School District

Please sign this petition in order to support the implementation of “creativity courses” in all Los Angeles Unified School District high schools.  A “creativity course” would be a class that students take every year of high school in which they focus on an extra-curricular project of their choosing that has been approved by the instructor – in order to ensure the students’ safety.  Students may work as individuals or in groups.  Class time will be spent working on their project.  The project of their choosing can be completed by the end of the school year, terminated by the end of the end of the school year, or continued throughout the following school years.

The purpose of implementing “creativity courses” in LA Unified high schools is to encourage the youth to be imaginative, innovative, entrepreneurial, and both independent and collaborative.  Students will be able to work on projects pertaining to an array of topics such as the arts, community service, and starting a business, which will provide them with experience in a field they are interested in before graduating.

The current LA Unified high school system is primarily focused on getting their students to graduate and hopefully attend college where students will then be encouraged to focus more on their passion or future career.  I think that there is no reason to wait until college and students should be encouraged from a much younger age to embark on projects that could help them to find their passion, find their career path, or help the world in any small – or big – way.
