Los Angeles mayoral candidates 2013: Los Angeles should hold the first-ever Spanish-speaking debate.

Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel should be disappointed with the abysmal 16% voter turnout in the primary. The city owes this to its constituents, and candidates have a duty to push for new ways to engage as many people as possible.

Consider the following facts about the people of Los Angeles:

Almost 50% of Angelenos are Latino
Almost 40% are foreign born
60% speak a language other than English at home
Less than 10% speak only English
43% of are Spanish-dominant
Almost 20% speak an Asian, Pacific Islander, or a European language

And having a Spanish debate could open up dialogue in other languages such as Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Armenian, Russian, Farsi, Arabic, Hebrew and Mandarin. The city has always been multi-lingual/multi-cultural and we should embrace our differences to unite us.
