NO! TO OPENING THE SYLMAR ARMORY YEAR-ROUND FOR USE AS A HOMELESS SHELTER
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
We believe that EVERY COMMUNITY must be REQUIRED to set aside land to be used to house the homeless. As stakeholders of Sylmar, we refuse to allow Sylmar to become a dumping ground for what other communities don’t want. This petition is written in response to a previous petition titled, “SOS! BUILD A YEAR-ROUND SHELTER IN SYLMAR NOW”, which advocates the opening of the Sylmar Armory year-round for the purposes of housing our city’s homeless. The 559 signatures on the stated petition were not all Sylmar stakeholders and therefore DO NOT accurately reflect the position of our community.
The increase in the homeless population has indeed been well documented throughout the entire state of California and in particular the San Fernando Valley. Knowing that this problem is not a Sylmar-specific issue, we believe it is unreasonable for the community of Sylmar to carry the burden of a city-wide problem. In fact, the opening of a shelter in any one particular area will only perpetuate the problem further. The signatories of our petition include residents of Sylmar and neighboring communities, as these are the residents that will be affected by this proposal. We believe in and demand the following:
- Our Belief
It is our belief that to open up a homeless shelter in any one particular community will burden that particular community while enabling other communities to ignore the problem altogether. This problem is statewide and it will only be addressed by all when EVERYONE has a vested interest in finding a solution.
- Our Demand
Based on the preceding paragraphs we demand that the city of Los Angeles consider what San Francisco and Sacramento are considering doing to address the homeless issue in their communities. Both San Francisco and Sacramento are considering using “Tiny” houses (pods). These pods are portable and their use by the homeless can be contingent upon meeting specific requirements. (i.e. no drugs, wrap around services, used for “bridge” housing...etc.) We believe that EVERY COMMUNITY must be REQUIRED to set aside land to be used to house the homeless.
As your constituents, we urge you to carefully consider our position as you move forward on this most serious issue.
