Declare L.A. a Sanctuary City & Open Vacant City Property to Homeless Encampments!

The Freedom Socialist Party has initiated a petition calling on Mayor Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Council to:
- Formally declare Los Angeles a Sanctuary City;
- Designate all city buildings to be safe places where Homeland Security and ICE cannot apprehend or harass immigrants;
- Officially declare a homelessness state of emergency; and
- Open vacant city buildings and properties for homeless shelters and encampments and provide rest rooms, garbage pick-up, and other survival services at each location.
During this crisis it is important to go on the offensive and demand what people need, in addition to protesting the attacks coming down on our communities from President Trump and his right-wing supporters.
Sufficient resources exist to provide decent housing for all, but, instead, the billionaires and mega corporations that control those resources invest their profits in making more profits.
Immigrants come to the United States because global capitalism imposes devastating poverty in their homelands. They make tremendous contributions to our communities and our economy. We must act now to prevent the brutal treatment that is being unleashed against them.

Recent executive orders and campaign promises by President Trump threaten the safety, security, and survival of immigrants from around the globe, especially Mexico, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Muslim countries. While Los Angeles does have policies protecting immigrants, the city has not yet declared itself a sanctuary. We call on the mayor and city council to join the other cities that have made that declaration and to make sanctuary a reality here by designating all of the city’s libraries, park and recreation facilities, social services offices and government buildings to be safe places, where Homeland Security and ICE cannot enter to apprehend or harass immigrants.
Open vacant city property to homeless encampments!
Homelessness remains a horrific crisis in Los Angeles, disproportionately affecting Blacks and Native Americans. Although the city has acquired funding (at the expense of poor and low income taxpayers) for some housing and has designated some parking for people who live in their vehicles, the problem vastly exceeds these efforts. We call on the mayor and city council to immediately declare a homelessness state of emergency, open its vacant properties to homeless residents, and provide rest rooms, garbage pick up, and other survival services at each location.
