STOP sending Organic Waste to the Landfill

STOP sending Organic Waste to the Landfill
The Issue
Los Angeles County residents – stop sending organic waste to the landfills!
Per CalRecycle, Residential Organic Waste is more than 45% of the waste sent to landfills. Organic waste includes yard waste (trees, branches, grass clippings) and food waste (spoiled produce, food remains). Food waste is the largest material type sent to the landfill, almost 22% of the total residential waste!
Instead of filling up our landfills with kitchen waste, organic waste should be processed and converted to soil amendment and energy.
Most SoCal cities have adopted programs to collect yard waste, but very few SoCal city residents are able to recycle their kitchen waste through their sanitation department. We are running out of space in our landfills. Permitting new landfills takes time and money. If we truck the waste to faraway places, the exhaust from the trucks adds greenhouse gases to the air we breathe and increases the rate of climate change.
By diverting kitchen waste, we can significantly change the amount of trash that we landfill! Sign this petition so SoCal cities and sanitation companies know we are serious about collecting kitchen waste!
