Victor Ban started this petition to Lori Main, Montgomery County Department of Transportation

We recently received a proposal from Montgomery County to destroy 35 precious Yoshino cherry trees that line our beautiful neighborhood near Farmland Elementary School. These mature cherry trees are iconic for our neighborhood, and their wholesale destruction will completely change the character and ecology of our community.

The mature Yoshino cherry trees provide environmental and aesthetic value to our community, including:

  1. Providing social and economic value by enhancing the beauty of our neighborhood;
  2. Cooling of the neighborhood streets by leafy canopies and plant transpiration;
  3. Combating climate change through sequestration of carbon in the trunks and roots; and
  4. Reducing run off to our overloaded water treatment systems through extensive root systems.

The Montgomery County and Maryland Roadside Tree Protection Laws were created to protect just such trees lining our streets.

We, the undersigned, as residents of the affected community, are asking you to work with us on a sustainable solution that will preserve our existing Yoshino cherry trees and protect pedestrians.
