The Kettering City School District has in place an abstinence only sex education plan that is hindering the ability for its youth to grow into their sexuality and normalizes the idea that sex should be shamed. It is not allowed in classrooms to teach about contraceptives and their potential benefits and downsides. Instead, students are taught that they just should not have sex at all until they are married and that this person should be the only person they are ever with. However, this is impractical. While I feel that it is for the best that middle school and high school students be told that they should not be having sex at that time, they should be taught about contraceptives and how they work for when the time comes that they are ready. It is impractical to teach abstinence until marriage education for many reasons, some of which are that the average person will first have sex at age 17, the average woman will have around four sexual partners in their life and the average man will have around six, and that women around eighty-nine percent of the time and men around ninety percent of the time will have sex before marriage. For these reasons and many others this type of education is impractical and detrimental to young teens.
