On March 2, 2021, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order (GA-34) lifting the mask mandate in Texas and increasing the capacity of all businesses and facilities in the state to 100 percent.  He stated, "...it is a reminder that each person has a role to play in their own personal safety and the safety of others. With this executive order, we are ensuring that all businesses and families in Texas have the freedom to determine their own destiny."

On March 3, the Texas Education Agency sent out a press release stating, "As a result of the lifting of the order on masks, TEA has updated its Public Health Guidance. Under this updated guidance, a public school system’s current practices on masks may continue unchanged. Local school boards have full authority to determine their local mask policy."

While there are conflicting studies on both the efficacy of masks and benefit vs. harm to those who are required to wear them for an extended period of time, NCBI published a study in November 2020 entitled "Facemasks in the COVID-19 era: A health hypothesis". This study presents a number of physiological and psychological effects and concludes that "Long-term consequences of wearing facemask can cause health deterioration, developing and progression of chronic diseases and premature death."

Out of an abundance of caution, we urge the Lorena ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Joe Kucera to consider the implications of this study and to once again empower parents’ constitutional right to make medical decisions for their children. We urge you to lift the mask mandate for Lorena ISD and allow parental choice to be the prevailing position within the District.

We all deserve medical autonomy. We all should respect each other and be given the opportunity to ensure we are all doing what we deem best for our children even though we may disagree with others.  Please make masks optional for students and staff.
