On the 5th of March 2009, Nobel Peace Prize winner and then, Burmese democracy campaigner, Dr Aung San Suu Kyi was given the Freedom of the City of Glasgow.
The symbolic gesture had echoes of the decision by the city in 1981 to bestow the Freedom of Glasgow on Nelson Mandela, while he was incarcerated on Robben Island by South Africa's apartheid regime.
Aung San Suu Kyi was then seen as an inspiration to the people of Burma and to those around the world, she was seen as a worthy recipient of Glasgow's highest honour.
However, today, in 2017 things are shamefully drastically different. Aung San Suu Kyi is the de-facto leader of Myanmar, a leader who is turning a blind eye to the ongoing genocide of the Rohingya Muslim population of Myanmars Rakhine State.
Over half a million Rohingya have fled across the border to Bangladesh since August of this year in search of safe haven from the ongoing murders, rape and ethnic cleansing.
However, Aung San Suu Kyi contininually denies any such ethnic cleansing is occuring and her continued inaction and denial is completely unnaceptable.
The reputation of the City of Glasgow's reputation is tainted by continuing to honour someone ho has become an apologist for ethnic cleanising, and as such Aung San Suu Kyi should be stripped of our City's highest honour now.
