I want to see a coordinated effort to reassess safety in Brisbane. I have started this petition as I was moved by the news of the heartbreaking murder of a young international student Sophie Collombet, after also hearing of the recent murder of Eunji Ban and attacks on international students and young women in Brisbane in recent years.
This has highlighted for me that there are improvements to be made in the safety of Brisbane. This is for not only for myself, other inner city workers and residents, but also for visitors to our city, including our student population. This is an issue relevant to all women and residents of Brisbane.
I am seeking improvements to public transport links in the inner city with after dark city circle buses to provide a safe and affordable transport option. In particular, I wish to see a review of the difficult public transport connections between Cultural Centre and Milton.
A review of lighting and CCTV coverage on our public paths, especially along riverfronts.
I want universities and international colleges to take a greater initiative in supporting students required to attend evening study to get home safely. I want to see Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government welcoming new students to Brisbane with information that will equip them to live safely within our city.
Please support this petition requesting safety in OUR CITY to be reassessed and improved. This is OUR CITY.
There is also a petition to the Queensland Parliament for a formal review of public safety in Brisbane, requesting practical changes around urban design to improve public safety.
